Small trade agonizes

Emblematic of the city centers, also the oldest establishments are closing doors, bowing to the crisis. Sales of the sector have decreased around 30% in the first months of the year. Daily, 16 shops in Lisbon close their doors.

The crisis and the austerity – which brought the rise in taxes, electricity and fuel alongside cuts in the available income, as well as unemployment and  reduction in consumption, are the main reasons for closures. However, the lack of heirs who want to continue the family business also contributes to the lack of alternatives.
